Buy Prager Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten
Wine Advocate 93 points - From Weissenkirchen’s most famous vineyard, the 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten opens stunningly clear, fresh and aromatic on the nose, displaying ripe and well-concentrated Veltliner aromas. Rich, juicy and full-bodied on the palate, this elegant and well-balanced Gruner is both fruit and terroir-driven, but still less iridescent than the Wachstum Bodenstein. The finish is still somewhat closed and displays greenish apple aromas, but indicates a great aging potential. I would store this wine for 3-5 years.  (Apr 2015)

Wine maker notes
Toni Bodenstein describes the grapes from the grand-cru-like Achleiten vineyard as coming from “destroyed soil.” So prized has this walled vineyard been over the years that it has been worked down by man and by nature to a point where the coverage of soil is only 40 cm in some parts. The loess soils just barely cover the granitic rocks underneath and yield grapes with great minerality. The long growing season of this southeast-facing vineyard allows the grapes here to attain a level of richness and complexity not often found in cool climate wines. The resulting wines are a stunning mix of finesse and structure.

In 1983, the now retired Franz Prager, cofounded the Vinea Wachau association, an organization dedicated to preserving the quality and culture of Wachau wines, while promoting Wachau”s image beyond Austrian borders. The marriage of Vienna-born Toni Bodenstein, to Franz”s daughter, Ilse, ushered in a sweeping renaissance at the Prager winery. These changes not only affected the way Prager thought, but also how Wachauers thought about their vineyards and their work as winemakers.
