Wine Advocate 93 points - A blend of 89% Syrah, 9% Grenache and 2% Viognier that saw roughly 10% whole clusters and 25 months in 25% new French oak, the 2012 Syrah Misfit is a smoking wine, and in Matthias’ lineup, it represents a rock-solid value. Showing lots of oak in its smoky, meaty, peppery and dark fruit-scented bouquet, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful density and a pure, clean profile that keeps you coming back to the glass. Showing better from bottle than barrel (which is a good thing), drink this terrific, character-filled Central Coast Syrah over the coming 7-8 years.
Wine Spectator 88 points - Soft and supple, with smoky blueberry aromas and appealing flavors of black raspberry, caramel and spice. Drink now through 2021. 250 cases made.
