Eye - Medium to deep purple colour with a hint of brick red at the rim.
Nose - Really ripe on the nose with classic Sangiovese aromas of black cherry stone, blackberry, pepper, leather and above all a herbal, oregano edge. Also some new oak from the aging. Fine yet complex.
Palate - The palate is supple and smooth on the attack, velvety and fruity with redcurrant jam and strawberry. It then fills out in the mid-palate and finishes with all the herbal elegance of top Sangiovese overlain with a touch of new oak. Creamy and long
Vinous 92 points - The estate’s 2012 Montesodi (Sangiovese) is a bit darker and richer than the 2012 Chianti Rufina Riserva Nipozzano Vecchie Viti, but it is also quite tasty. Here the flavor profile leans towards the darker end of the Sangiovese spectrum. Sweet black cherries, mint, cloves and new leather meld together in a voluptuous, fleshy Sangiovese to drink now and over the next decade.
A cru selection with its initial vintage in 1974, Montesodi Riserva is made only in exceptional growing years. It is produced from Sangiovese grown in the Montesodi vineyard, which, at 400 metres’ elevation, has always been regarded as the finest on the Tenuta for growing Sangiovese. It yields a rich, intense wine of remarkable aromas.
