Vinous 93 points - (a blend from six vineyards, all harvested between October 21 and November 2): Bright ruby. Aromas of blueberry, licorice and green pepper, plus a hint of leathery rusticity. Nicely pliant in the mouth, with a slight greenness but good breadth to the dark berry, tobacco and mineral flavors. Robin Lail says that 2011 reminds her of 2000 and 1998 but I rate the newer vintage ahead of both of those earlier years.
Wine Advocate 89 points - I noted that of the six sources used in the well-made 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint, five of them are hillside locations off the valley floor, which no doubt explains its success in this irregular year. The wine’s deep ruby/purple is followed by notes of black currants, blackberries, charcoal, forest floor and a hint of cigar tobacco. Impressively endowed for a 2011, this soft Cabernet should be consumed over the next 7-10 years. (Oct 2013)
An outstanding value, this lush Cabernet-Merlot blend offers a complexity rarely found in its price category. Designed to introduce new friends to the Lail Vineyards family, Blueprint combines grapes from the younger vineyards in our portfolio to create a stylistic resonance with our J. Daniel Cuvee. Unifying past and present, Blueprint alludes to Jon Lailís career as an architect.
