Wine Advocate 89 points - Largely from 1990 plantings in the family?s Aurora Vineyard ? the original Ponzi plantings of this cepage having early on been grafted over to the more marketable Pinot Gris ? their 2012 Pinot Blanc delivers very varietal-typical apple, sweet corn and lime, wreathed in honeysuckle; texturally subtly creamy yet allied to refreshing acidity; and with smoky black tea and pungent corn shoot adding punch to a satisfyingly juicy finish. Thinking about the generous influence of loess soils on Austrian whites, I imagine a certain kinship in the efficacy of similar glacial dust halfway round the world at Aurora. Intriguingly, the balance of this wine comes from Thistle Vineyard in the hills just west of Dundee, source of Ayoub?s memorable Chardonnay. A fine value, it is going to prove versatile for at least the next couple of years, and quite possibly pick up additional allure beyond. As I never tire of pointing out, true Pinot Blanc is nearly everywhere in the world under-appreciated in nearly every possible respect. (Oct 2013)
Wine Enthusiast 90 points - More full and fleshier than the 2011 Pinot Blanc from Ponzi, here the spices are more prominent and the flavors bigger, yet not quite as complex. The fruit suggests lemon verbena, lime, grapefruit and starfruit, with a lightly peppery note on the finish. (Oct 2013)
Founded in 1970 by Dick and Nancy Ponzi, Ponzi Vineyards has set the standard for viticultural innovation and winemaking excellence in Oregon. From the start, the family has practiced sustainable agriculture and its four estate vineyards – Abetina, Madrona, Aurora and Avellana are LIVE Certified Sustainable. In 1988, Robert Parker named Dick Ponzi as one of the finest winemakers in the world; only three other Americans have been so recognized. In 1994 Dick’s daughter Luisa took over primary winemaking responsibilities. Luisa apprenticed with Christophe Roumier of Domaine Roumier in Burgundy, France as well as with Luca Currado of Vietti in Piedmont, Italy. “There is a reputation behind our label that I want people to know they can count on.” ~ Winemaker Luisa Ponzi
