Vinous 91 points - Inky purple. Intense, smoke-tinged blackberry and cassis on the nose, with deeper notes of licorice and espresso adding complexity. Sweet, broad and densely packed, with velvety flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry and peppery spices in the background. Closes with excellent clarity, smooth tannins and a suave, very persistent floral pastille quality.
Wine Spectator 93 points - Solidly built, with charcoal and ganache notes up front, revealing dark plum, currant paste and fig flavors at the core for balance. The long, olive-tinged finish has ample grip for the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2026.—J.M. (Jan 22 2014)
Rhone Valley, France
Grapes come from 95-year-old vines on the steep, granite slopes of the right bank of the Rhone at an elevation of 920 feet above sea level. All work in the vineyards is done manually and without the use of pesticides or irrigation, respecting the local environment.
|Wine maker notes
|Grapes are hand-harvested and de-stemmed. The grapes macerate for one month. Fermentation takes places in stainless steel tanks for a period of 10 days at an average temperature of 69°F. Post fermentation maceration lasts a period of 12 days at a temperature of 84°F. The wine is then aged for 22 months in oak barrels 1/3 in new, 2/3 in 1 to 3-year-old oak barrels. When ready for bottling, the wine is fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered.
|Excellent with duck, steaks, lamb, hearty Italian dishes with red sauce, stews, and game. Pairs well with strong cheeses.
