Wine Advocate 88 points - Resin, lanolin and toast overtones from barrel render Deiss’s multi-cepage 2011 Mambourg a challenge for me to appreciate. Moreover, they have a drying effect on the peach and apple fruit fundament found on an expansive but noticeably tannic palate. I’d like to revisit this by 2015 or 2016 but am skeptical that a more satisfying sense of fruit or sap much less grace or elegance will emerge. (Aug 2014)

Wine maker notes
Dominant SIGOLSHEIM, the MAMBOURG is the most precocious hillside among the vineyards. Known since the Middle Ages, many monasteries and lords had owned this land and gave it their credentials. Beneficing from a maximum duration of sunshine, its magnesium soil grows on the conglomerated limestone and marl hills of Tertiary Era. This particular geology from Quaternary Oligocene limestone grants MAMBOURG a very rare characteristic: powerful tannins always presented and a round smooth in the palate. Our low-trained vines, planted with all the Pinots in an intensity of 12 700 vine/hectare, produce between 15 and 20 hl / ha: wines are always perfectly dry with an exaggerated power and an extreme complexity.

Domaine Marcel DEISS is located in Bergheim, a small village nestling in the heart of the wine region of Alsace, equidistant from the northern and southern boundaries of the region. Current winemaker Jean-Michel DEISS was born into a long-established family of wine growers, living at BERGHEIM since 1744. Managed today by Jean-Michel DEISS, the domaine consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers . The extreme variation in conditions of production at the domaine have led Jean-Michel DEISS to seek to express in each wine the three factors that make a wine complete: the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir. The greater the wine, the more the gustatory characteristics linked to the soil take the place of the typicity linked to grape variety or vintage. When speaking of terroir, the following have to be taken into consideration: geology, pedology, climate and microclimate, technical exploitation of the character of the soil, microfauna and flor, and the traditional methods and techniques used to produce wines.
