Wine Spectator 90 points - Inky purple/black cherry color. The opening scents of prunes and black raisins are delightfully round and supple. In the mouth, the taste profile detonates with explosions of plums, quince, black raisins and oaky vanilla. Luscious and elegant.
Intense, powerful and complex, this features heady aromas and flavors of toffee, marzipan, butterscotch and chocolate. Notes of mocha and French roast chime in as well, with a long, glorious finish of dried white fruits and spice. Drink now. From Portugal.—K.M.
This is a mature wine of deep amber color with russet highlights. The bouquet's complex marriage of ripe, plummy fruit, warm cinnamon and butterscotch notes and subtle oak nuances are confirmed on the palate, which is full and voluminous, with a velvety texture carrying into a long, elegant finish. As you swirl this in the glass, the complexity builds with each sip, with layers of olive and almond, mineral and schist. It feels cool, balancing all the sweetness of fruit with fresh mineral acidity. A rich, bold mouthful.
|Pairs well with figs, almonds, pecan pie, caramel and creme brulee. It can be served at the end of the meal on its own, with walnuts or dried fruit, and can be slightly chilled in the summer. Made to be enjoyed immediately.
