Deep coppery red colour robe with complex nose of brandied fruits and peppery spice. Well-structured, dense and rich with a long, spicy finish.
Wine Spectator 90 points - Alluring, with a mix of mulled spice, steeped plum, pastis, warm ganache and roasted alder notes that are intertwined from start to finish. Fine-grained grip holds the finish, showing a good tug of earth. Drink now through 2022. 1,800 cases made.-JM  (Oct 31 2014)

Vinous 91 points - Opaque ruby. Perfumed aromas of red berry compote, cherry and woodsmoke, with a dusty mineral quality adding lift and cut. Shows very good depth and precision on the palate, offering sappy raspberry and candied lavender flavors that become spicier with air. Clings with very good tenacity on the finish, which features supple tannins and resonating spiciness.  (May 2015)

Wine maker notes
This Gigondas 1/2Sainte-Catherine» wine highlights the Gabriel Meffre savoir-faire in producing expressive and elegant wines, truly representing the Southern Rhone Valley terroirs. Composition This Gigondas comes from old vines, it is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault grapes. The calcareous soil contains fallen rocks from foothills of Dentelles de Montmirail. With a Southern French climate renowned for its contrasts; it endures the summer heat and violent Mistral winds. Vinification This wine is hand-harvested and meticulously sorted. The grape varieties are fermented separately to develop their individual characteristics. The fermentation on skins lasts for about 3 weeks to obtain a heightened aromatic extraction. The fermentation is done in vats, with a strict control of temperatures (28 to 31°C maximum). The wine is racked off and undergoes malolactic fermentation. It is aged 18 months in barrels.

The story of the Gabriel Meffre Winery began in 1936, when Gabriel and his wife, both passionate about wine, created their ‘Negociant-Vinificateur’ business in Gigondas. Almost 80 years later, the family business has built on its strong foundations and has established its reputation as a leading Winery in the southern Rhone Valley, with the complementary know-how linked to being both ‘Negociant-Eleveur’ and Producer, recognised for the quality of its wines. The Winery has innovated and grown over the years. Now, it encompasses all aspects of the wine business. It owns the Domaine de Longue Toque Estate in Gigondas - 27 ha of AOP Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu - and manages the Chateau Grand Escalion Vineyard in the Costieres de Nimes winegrowing area - 44 ha of AOP Costieres de Nimes and Varietal Wines. Both vineyards apply the principles of reasoned viticulture according to the Terra Vitis® charter. The Winery perpetuates the spirit and traditions of its founders through strong values: a passion for wine, respect for the environment and terroirs, a spirit of innovation, and knowledge-sharing which fosters the creation of close and lasting ties with its winemaking partners. The Winery is also very much involved in the local community. It has been a major sponsor of the “Festival d’Avignon” (theater festival) since 2011, partners numerous events in Gigondas and regularly displays the work of local artists in its Wine Cellar. Since 2009, the story continues with Eric Brousse, CEO of the Winery and a renowned figure in the world of wine, together with Etienne Maffre, Assistant Managing Director, who arrived in 1996 as Technical Director. They are pursuing the work begun by their predecessors whilst giving the business new impetus in certain key directions: strong growth in its export markets (our wines are present in 50 countries) thanks to quality brands adapted to consumers’ needs; consolidation of the French market, particularly in the on-trade sector. Today, the Winery is firmly established as a reference in southern Rhone Valley wines.
