Wine Enthusiast 92 points - This is a complex and layered wine, with forward notes of creme de cassis, menthol, pepper, licorice and leather that are supported by a core of ripe plum and blackberry fruit. A blend of 37% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec and 8% Petit Verdot, the plush and creamy texture is complemented by velvety tannins and hints of singed earth and bramble on the finish. Drink now-2021.
Vinous 93 points - (56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot; the winery’s ”Left Bank blend”): Bright medium ruby-red. Inviting aromas of dark plum, cassis, spices, licorice and menthol. Plush, velvety and seamless on the palate, offering lovely pliancy for a Cabernet-dominated wine. The dark berry and spice flavors are complemented by a chocolatey richness but kept firm by underlying minerality. Finishes with serious, well-buffered tannins and building, palate-saturating length. Has the balance to be enjoyed early or to cellar. As with the Z blend, this bottling is now made entirely with estate fruit. De Toren is very concerned about avoiding harsh tannins and greenness in their wines and thus employs women to pick the fruit due to their gentler hands.
Wine Spectator 92 points - Rich and layered, with roasted tobacco leaf and grilled savory notes accenting the dark plum and steeped blackberry fruit. Best from 2016 through 2020.-J.M. (Feb 18 2015)
