It was love at first sight for this old, this very old vineyard on the Charitois slopes, firmly ensconced in the Morvan foothills and of a positively medieval beauty. The slopes are abrupt and unembellished, surrounded by a cathedral of a forest peopled with great mairandier oak trees, the scent of casks awaiting the precious liquid. Monastic, Burgundian limestone - it was certainly Cluny from whence came the cultured monks who brought this vineyard into being. Cistercian monks, Burgundian at heart and connoisseurs if ever there were such things, founders of a Burgundy so rich in history and magnificent local wines. An interesting historical nugget - this parcel of Montaillant land was gifted to the Cistercian monks of Bourras by Etienne, Count of Sancerre. The Bourras priory was one of the hundred and sixty-five Cistercian monasteries scattered across France in the first half of the 12th century and, following the example of their brothers at Clos Vougeot, the monks of Bourras made viticulture part of Cistercian economy, setting up a storeroom within their monastery. A vineyard crossed by the Way of St James, the Via Podiensis starting in Le Puy-en-Velay, and best known to us from the Codex Calixtinus, the first pilgrim’s guide, compiled by Aymeric Picaud in 1140. In this text, we learn of the route that still crosses our vineyard and which gave it its name, Domaine des Penitents.
Technical notes
Cuvee Penitents is produced from vines whose age isbetween 12 and 16 years old approximately. Average yield: 42 hl / ha. Harvesting is done in boxes of 400 kg. All the grapes are sorted by a sorting table and transported by conveyor belt to the presses (pressing whole grains)

Other text
The Domaine des Penitents, some 18 hectares of limestone rich in entrochus, facing due south and planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A forgotten vineyard, just 35 kilometers from our Sancerre producers, and a real challenge for an adventurer in the kingdom of the wine. Organic and biodynamic cultivation, severe disbudding, grapes gathered and crated by hand, and sorting table.

As far back as the XVI century, in 1513 to be exact, the local records mention the MELLOT family, whose life even at that time was governed by the seasons of the vine and the production of wines of excellent quality. The Mellot family, vinegrowers and wine merchants, was again mentioned during the siege of the town. They pursued their patient labours and continued to gain recognition because Cesar Mellot was appointed as Wine Advisor to Louis XIV in 1698. The wines are produced from the upper Sancerre vineyard, the most famous of which is the DOMAINE LA MOUSSIERE. Its exceptional quality has led to it being officially classified as a unique category amongst the Sancerre wines.
